DIY

DIY (Do It Yourself) has several advantages in design when it comes to being environmentally sensitive. DIY allows us, even stuents, to make a difference right now.

Companies such as Ponoko and Shapways allows designers to produce products as they come in demand. This prevents over producing, and minimizes the amount of waste material. When these companies get orders, they product the submitted product at there closest facility to where the end user is, cutting back on energy used in shipping. This allows a designer to sell a product on the other side of the world, but in a sense keep the manufacturing local to the consumer.

"It means goods can be made in the greenest way. Making on demand reduces warehousing and wastage. Plus, making locally emphasizes digital transportation of goods instead of the traditional shipping of physical products."
